This is a classic horse-drawn carriage that is clearly designed for passenger transport in style and comfort. It is a closed carriage, also known as a saloon or coupé. Some features that stand out:
Closed passenger cabin: the occupants were sheltered from wind and weather. The windows could usually be opened for ventilation.
Seat for the coachman: above the front axle is a raised trestle where the driver handled the reins of the horses.
Large wire wheels at the rear, smaller ones at the front: this gave stability, comfort and made the body more manoeuvrable.
Long drawbar wood (the two long trees in front): intended for harnessing horses.
Elegant finish: black lacquered woodwork with fine lines, typical of the more chic, urban carriages.
This type of carriage was mainly used by wealthy citizens and nobility in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a luxury means of transport before the rise of the automobile. Nowadays, such carriages are popular as antique collector's items, and you sometimes still see them on special occasions such as weddings or historical parades.
