1972 BMW 3.0 CSi Coupe, 200pk, E9, PM-61-19

Model History and Background

The BMW 3.0 CSi is one of the most iconic coupés in BMW’s history. The model is part of the E9 generation, which BMW referred to at the time as the “Grand Coupé” series. The E9 combined an elegant coupe body with six-cylinder technology, which allowed BMW to further solidify its position in the high-end sports car segment during this period.

Engine and Performance

The 3.0 CSi was produced from July 1971 through November 1975 and was the more powerful version of the 3.0 CS. The 2,985 cc inline six-cylinder engine was equipped with electronically controlled fuel injection and delivered 200 pk from the factory. This enabled a top speed of approximately 220 km/h, a particularly impressive achievement for the early 1970s.

Production Numbers and Historical Significance

According to the BMW Group Archive, approximately 8,100 units of the BMW 3.0 CSi were built. The E9 series also served as the precursor to the later BMW 6 Series and therefore holds an important place in the history of BMW’s large coupés.

Restoration and Bodywork

The car has undergone extensive restoration in the past. The restoration work was carried out by Classic Centre Etten-Leur, and documentation of this is available.

According to the seller, the body and chassis are rust-free. The BMW was restored while retaining its original body color.

Historical value and character

With its characteristic E9 design, powerful six-cylinder engine, and relatively limited production run, the 3.0 CSi is today a recognizable representative of BMW’s classic Grand Coupé generation.

Appraisal Report – Technical Condition

According to the appraisal report by Expertise & Taxatiebureau Bol B.V., prepared on July 9, 2024, this 1972 BMW 3.0 CSi is in excellent technical, visual, and cosmetic condition. It is a left-hand-drive coupé with a 2,985 cc six-cylinder gasoline engine producing 147 kW, mated to a manual four-speed Getrag transmission. During the visual inspection, no leaks were observed in either the engine or the transmission, and the condition of both was assessed as good.  

Appraisal Report – Body and Paint

According to the report, the body is in a beautiful, sleek, and undamaged condition. The undercarriage was, as far as could be seen during the appraisal, undamaged and rust-free. The gray metallic paint has been completely redone and was rated “very good” by the appraiser. According to the report, the wheels and tires were also in very good condition.  

Appraisal Report — Interior and Equipment

The interior features red leather and is described as attractive and in good condition. The dashboard is undamaged and original, as is the headliner. The anthracite-colored floor carpeting was in very good condition at the time of the appraisal. The listed equipment includes, among other things, wood dashboard trim, alloy wheels, metallic paint, leather interior upholstery, and a sunroof in the body color.

Appraisal Report – Assessment and Appraised Value

The appraiser rates the overall condition of the BMW as “EXCELLENT.” Taking into account all factors deemed relevant by the appraiser, the appraisal value or replacement value was set on July 9, 2024, at €128,000, including VAT or margin. The assessment was conducted without a test drive or disassembly, and the report constitutes a valuation, not a technical inspection.

Validity of the Appraisal Report

According to the terms and conditions included in the appraisal report, it is valid for a maximum of three years. As such, the report is currently still valid, in principle until July 9, 2027.

Conclusion of the appraisal report

An independent and currently valid appraisal thus supports both the exceptionally good condition of this vehicle and its high level of quality.
